A bank in Wichita, Kansas announced that the legislation will enable it to give more bonuses to its employees. A manufacturer in Louisiana says that, due to lower taxes, it can raise wages and boost investment. The US Chamber of Commerce has published an interactive map showing scores of companies who have converted their savings from tax reform into employee bonuses, increased benefits and cuts in pricing to customers. A stock market analyst says that tax reform, along with other reductions in regulations, is shifting the stock market “into overdrive.”Wow! Seems like great stuff. But is it true? I’ve always supported broad-based tax reductions and – even though I’m as terrified as many economists are about the impact these cuts will have on our government’s deficits and national debt in the long term – I’m confident that a lower tax base will drive capital spending, increase wages, attract foreign investment and significantly boost our economy. It’s the way to go.But am I sure about how the specifics of the bill will impact me? Are you? It’s only just the middle of the calendar year and only a few short months since the legislation passed. Many of us have seen a slight boost in our paychecks from reduced withholdings and that’s a good thing. But have you done the number-crunching that’s required to truly know how the legislation will affect you and your business? I can’t speak for the business owners who so confidently and happily testified to the congressional committee. But if they’re like most of our more than 600 clients, I’m not so sure they have. For example, have you taken the time to sit down with your accountant and create a “pro-forma” analysis of your tax liabilities for all of 2018 using the new rates, deductions and credits? This is not so hard. You can base it on estimated income and expense numbers from your results so far. You’re not going to know the impact of tax reform until you do the math. But this exercise isn’t the only exercise you should do. To really get the full picture, you should ask your accountant to complete one other exercise: consider the effects of a filing status change. That’s because, depending on whether your business files as a “pass-through” or a C-corporation you may (or may not) see a significant savings if you were to change how you file. This is not something that happens quickly so you need to run these numbers now. So have you and your accountant done all of this work and tested out all the alternatives? If you’re like me, you probably haven’t. If not, how can we possibly know how much the tax reform bill will affect us? Maybe all of those happy business owners who testified to the small business committee and all the other excited business owners praising tax reform have done this. But I have my doubts. Unless I’m convinced otherwise, I’ll have to take their testimony in this politically-charged debate with a grain of salt. In May this year, Taylor chose Michael Novak, a company member since 2010, as his artistic director-designate. • Paul Belville Taylor, dancer and choreographer, born 29 July 1930; died 29 August 2018 Twitter 25 Similarly, his choreography could be blissfully optimistic, as in Aureole, Airs (1978), Arden Court (1981), Mercuric Tidings (1982), Cascade (1999) and Spring Rounds (2005), or dark and scathing, as in the social critiques of Scudorama, Big Bertha (1970), Last Look (1985), Speaking in Tongues (1988), The Word (1998), Banquet of Vultures (2005) and House of Joy (2012).Sometimes, Taylor would wrestle with both extremes in the same work, as in, for example, Cloven Kingdom (1976), Sunset (1983), Spindrift (1993) and Black Tuesday (2001). He could also be wickedly funny – witness the biblically inspired satire Agatha’s Tale (1968), his subversive retelling of Snow White (1983), the can-can dancing and duelling in Offenbach Overtures (1995) and two recent courting romps, Troilus and Cressida (Reduced) (2006) and Gossamer Gallants (2011).And sometimes, he would change track completely, with works such as the hauntingly beautiful Eventide and the sultry Piazzolla Caldera (both 1997) and the elegiac Beloved Renegade (2008). By always changing the theme, movement style and musical accompaniment of his dances, Taylor resisted being pigeonholed. The premiere of a new work always generated intrigue and surprise.Taylor was a creative polymath. Close friends treasured the objets trouvés gifts he made for them from driftwood, seashells and items washed ashore near his second home high on a bluff on Long Island. He captivated audiences with his athletic and lyrical performances between 1954 and 1974, and through early works such as Three Epitaphs (1956), Junction (1960), Aureole (1962), Scudorama (1963) and Orbs (1966), he proved that the concept of “choreographic style” could embrace a tantalisingly diverse range of dances. In a career spanning six decades of dance-making, he created more than 140 works, many of them enduring repertory favourites. In both his life and his work, Taylor was something of a paradox. He shunned the spotlight, preferring instead the solitary pleasure of a good book, pottering in his garden or doing jigsaws – almost always in the company of a trusted canine companion and a packet of cigarettes. Tall, broad-shouldered and incredibly limber, he moved with the grace and buoyancy of a gazelle on stage, but with a quiet, unassuming demeanour off stage. collapsed Paul Taylor in 1964. Taylor also turned his hand to writing, including several pieces for the New Yorker, his autobiography, Private Domain (1987), and a collection of musings entitled Facts and Fancies (2013), in which he revealed “Why I Make Dances”, “How to Tell Ballet from Modern” and “Tricks of the Trade”.Son of Paul Taylor, a physicist, and Elizabeth (nee Pendleton), he was born in Edgewood, Pennsylvania. His parents parted in his early years and he spent his childhood moving between Bethesda, Maryland, where he spent holidays on a farm, Washington DC, where his mother ran a restaurant, and an Episcopal boarding school in Lynchburg, Virginia. He studied painting at Syracuse University from 1949 until 1952 and it was there, even before he began formal dance training, that he choreographed his first work, Hobo Ballet, for the university’s modern dance club. After trying out for the Syracuse swimming team, he was awarded a sports scholarship but surprised his friends and coaches by transferring before his final year to the Juilliard School, New York, in order to start his dance education in earnest. He left Juilliard after only a year and soon obtained work with several modern dance choreographers, including Merce Cunningham, Pearl Lang and Charles Weidman, and he also performed on Broadway and in television. Between 1955 and 1962, he was a soloist with the Martha Graham Dance Company and in 1959 George Balanchine created a prominent role for him in Episodes.Soon after arriving in New York, Taylor teamed up with the painter Robert Rauschenberg, who designed all his dances until 1960. George (Babe) Wilson was another friend from these early years – they lived together until Wilson’s death in 2004. Wilson was deaf and speech-impaired so Taylor learned to sign – at a critical time when he was exploring various forms of non-verbal communication in an attempt to forge his particular movement style. His early choreography focused on the body’s potential for subtle postural and gestural changes, and in this everyday approach to movement, he predated the experiments of the postmodernists of the Judson Dance Theater by almost a decade. One work, Duet, featured Taylor dressed in a business suit and tie, standing motionless on stage in a choreographic interpretation of John Cage’s “silent” score 4’33”. Louis Horst’s review in response – a blank column in the Dance Observer magazine – brought Taylor to the attention of New York’s mainstream critics and audiences.Seven New Dances was a career-defining event for Taylor, too, because it prompted him to reconsider his choreographic approach: “I decided to start over from scratch. Some kind of building blocks were needed, some clearly defined ABCs.” Subsequently, he evolved a rich dance vocabulary which combined the postures, gestures and stillnesses of everyday movement with the stylised contractions and spirals of modern dance. To these, Taylor added long, unbroken movement phrases known as “scribbles”, and highly rhythmic, space-devouring travelling steps. He began to develop his musicality in Junction and Aureole by choreographing to the densely textured patterns and larger melodic structures of scores by Bach and Handel. This interest in baroque music culminated in Taylor’s monumental Musical Offering (1986) and the majestic Promethean Fire (2002).The unequivocal success of Aureole persuaded him to focus exclusively on his own choreography and full-time company from 1962 onwards. Thereafter, the Paul Taylor Dance Company toured extensively. After its first London season, at the Shaftesbury theatre in 1964, Taylor was named dancer of the year by Dance and Dancers magazine and many more accolades were to follow. He was the recipient of three Guggenheim fellowships, and several honorary doctorates and lifetime achievement awards, including a MacArthur Foundation fellowship in 1985, the US National Medal of Arts in 1993 and membership of the Légion d’honneur in 2000.In 1974, following Taylor’s collapse onstage during the New York premiere of American Genesis, he decided to retire from performing. Until that point, his striking physique and stage presence had dominated his choreography but, from 1975 onwards, he began to assemble a company of outstanding soloists, and to create some of his greatest work. Other companies and dancers were increasingly attracted to his choreography– Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and the New York City Ballet principals Peter Martins, Suzanne Farrell and Peter Frame all performed as guest artists with his company.A surge of interest in the early 90s by classical ballet companies not only to restage Taylor’s works but also to commission new choreography augured a new phase. A repertory preservation project involving several major American ballet companies performing Company B (1991) led to the founding in 1993 of a second company, Taylor 2, to meet demand for his works, and the creation of a Taylor archive. It also sparked a new choreographic trend for works inspired by the popular songs and dances of a particular time period. unthreaded View more commentslast_img read more

US wants access to NHS in postBrexit deal says Trump ally

The shadow health secretary, Jonathan Ashworth, said the comments were deeply concerning.“The ambassador’s comments are terrifying and show that a real consequence of a no-deal Brexit, followed by a trade deal with Trump, will be our NHS up for sale. This absolutely should not be on the table,” he said. “Nigel Farage and the Tories want to rip apart our publicly funded and provided NHS. He said the products should be offered to British consumers who could decide whether to buy them.“There will have to be some deal where you give the British people a choice,” he said. “American products can come over and be allowed to come over. Agriculture is extremely important to the president and to any American president … but if the British people like it, they can buy it; if they don’t like it, they don’t have to buy it.”Johnson said complaints about US food standards were ill-informed. “It’s completely safe. They can have a choice, we have five million Brits coming over every year and I’ve never heard a complaint about anything to do with chicken,” he said.Trump, who gave several interviews to UK papers before his state visit on Monday, has suggested the UK should send the Brexit party leader, Nigel Farage, to negotiate its departure from the EU and has said he hopes Boris Johnson becomes Conservative leader.Woody Johnson said on Sunday that Trump’s support for Boris Johnson stemmed from their personal relationship. “He’s known Boris Johnson for a long time and what he’s commenting on is his knowledge of Boris Johnson as a person,” the ambassador said.On Sunday Trump denied calling the Duchess of Sussex “nasty” for having previously criticised him. In a tweet after the Sun made the claim, he said he had “never called Meghan Markle nasty” and claimed the “Fake News Media” had invented his remarks. The Sun posted a recording of the original interview to prove that its reporting was accurate. Associated Press Mississippi had 121 dolphin strandings as of Wednesday, with 89 in Louisiana, 32 in Alabama and 37 in Florida, Fougeres said.Moby Solangi, director of the Institute of Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, Mississippi, put that state’s total on Thursday at 126, and said the opening of the Bonnet Carré spillway was at least partly to blame. The effects were worse for Mississippi’s dolphins than the BP spill was, he said, noting that 91 dead dolphins were found in Mississippi during all of 2010.Dolphins continued to die for years because of oil spill damage, a 2015 study reported.Freshwater exposure “doesn’t appear to be the cause of death for all animals, so that’s something we’re continuing to investigate”, Fougeres said. Rowles noted that 70% of the carcasses were too decomposed for necropsy. She said other possible causes might include chemicals and other pollutants in the river water, and changes in the dolphins’ usual prey as fish and crabs needing higher salinity left the bays and estuaries where 15 of the area’s 17 dolphin groups live.Such groups tend to stay in their home territories despite changes that could harm them, Fougeres said. She said Noaa fisheries also was investigating reports of increased turtle strandings in Louisiana and Mississippi. Those numbers are above five- and 10-year averages, but are lower than some previous years, Fougeres said.“We do not suspect sea turtle strandings are related to freshwater exposure,” she said. “But we are concerned that decreased salinity could have effects on their prey and habitat.” Last modified on Sun 16 Jun 2019 08.33 EDT Share on Facebook At least 279 animals have been stranded, triple the usual figure, and 98% have died, prompting investigation This undated photo provided by the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies shows lesions on a dolphin at a shoreline. Those reports said the spill contributed to the Gulf of Mexico’s largest and longest dolphin die-off.“We do know some of the health conditions … are improving, but some have been slow to improve,” Rowles said on Friday. “Reproduction in the heaviest-oiled areas continues below normal.”Erin Fougeres, administrator for the marine mammal stranding program in Noaa fisheries’ south-east region, said 23% of the dolphins stranded from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle had sores consistent with freshwater exposure. Scientists Simulate Marsquakes With Data From InSight Lander

first_imgScientists Simulate Marsquakes With Data From InSight Lander Tagged In sciencespacenasamarseth zurichseismologyseis Post a Comment 0 Comments Ginny From ‘Harry Potter’ Is 28 and Unrecognizably Gorgeous The Transformation of Daisy Ridley Is Turning Heads If you’ve ever wondered how different marsquakes are from earthquakes, we now have the answer thanks to NASA and Swiss research university ETH Zurich. NASA delivered the first-ever seismometer to the red planet aboard the InSight lander last year, and it’s now deployed and sending back data. Researchers from ETH Zurich have used that data to reconstruct a marsquake here on Earth, and it’s not what anyone expected. InSight touched down on Mars back in November of 2018. The robotic lander’s goal is to study the interior of Mars, which has not been possible with past missions like Curiosity. Among InSight’s instruments is the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS). NASA successfully deployed the sensor in December of 2018 (see above) after building a model of InSight’s landing zone on Earth to rehearse the delicate process. InSight placed the instrument about 5.3 feet (1.6 meters) away, close to the maximum reach of its robotic arm. If SEIS didn’t make good contact with the ground, its data wouldn’t be useful. Luckily, the sensor works perfectly and detected its first marsquake in April 2019. In a new video, ETH Zurich scientists demonstrate the differences between seismic events on Earth, the moon, and Mars. They have a quake simulator that can reproduce a seismic event from data as you’d get from an instrument like SEIS or the seismometer deployed on the moon by Apollo 11 50 years ago. Seismic waves are affected by the composition of a planet or moon, so you’d expect different worlds to have different quakes. Indeed, quakes on Earth feature strong initial P-wave arrival followed by a stronger S-wave. To experience moonquakes, the team had to scale the signal up by one million times. Seismic waves on the moon have much smaller attenuation with strong scattering. So a moonquake could last an hour or more. For the marsquake simulation, the team had to increase the InSight signal by 10 million times. The lander has so far detected two “families” of marsquakes. There’s a high-frequency version and the low-frequency version demonstrated in the video. The lower-frequency quakes may originate farther from InSight. The waves aren’t the same as on Earth, but they’re not like the moon either. ETH Zurich researchers believe Mars will end up having seismic properties in between the two. In time, the seismic data from Mars could help us better understand its composition without cracking it open to take a peek. Now read:InSight Lander Records the Sound of Martian WindInSight Takes Its First Mars SelfieInSight Beams Back Daily Weather Reports From Mars You Might Also LikePowered By ZergNet By Ryan Whitwam on July 23, 2019 at 1:54 pm Facebook Twitter Linkedin Pinterest Google Plus Reddit Hacker News Flipboard Email Copy 0shares This site may earn affiliate commissions from the links on this page. Cops always want safe cars that go fast. But municipal and state governments also want police cars that don’t guzzle gasoline, so hybrids are a now big part of the picture. For every high-speed chase, there are dozens of hours sitting in parking lots watching traffic and writing reports, and for that, hybrids play an increasing role. Ford is focusing on police cars based on the 2020 Ford Explorer SUV, but it’s also selling Ford Fusion hybrids and F-150 pickups in police livery.Ford this spring has been running a coast-to-coast road show for public safety and government officials, as well as journalists looking for news, or free doughnuts. Here’s what Ford is up to.Take rear parking sonar and blind spot detection, or BLIS (blind spot information system) in Ford parlance. On civilian cars, it warns if you’re about to back into something or change lanes into the path of a car you didn’t see in your side mirror. (If you’d bothered to look.) Here, Ford’s Police Perimeter Alert provides 270 degrees of coverage and tracks the pitter-patter of feet moving around the patrol car when police are stopped and writing reports. The electronics also pick up people (on civilian cars as well) behind the car. Ford adds icons and motion paths on the center stack display and tracks if the people are moving around the car or if they’re approaching the car. It can sound an alert, or even roll up the windows and lock the car.Ford police vehicles also offer rear camera on demand. Flip a switch when you’re parked or moving and you can see what’s behind you. Regular cars only show what’s behind when you’re backing up.Traditional safety means making the car more crash resistant. Ford can add bracing to the underside of a highway-intended vehicle to allow for a survivable accident when a parked police car is stopped on the roadside and it’s hit by another car at up to 75 mph.Federal standards specify 50 mph protection. An impact at 75 mph results in an impact twice as severe. Two levels of ballistic armor can be added to the side door panels, providing Level III+ and Level IV+ protection against a specified list of ammunition being fired a the vehicle.Ford is building into its cars some of the special flashing lights abilities that used to call for aftermarket equipment. It’s also standardizing additional mounting points for specialty lights. The steering wheels get four buttons that can be designated for specific tasks, something that would be nice on civilian cars. The seats are typically fabric — very long life fabric — and the bolsters are designed with an eye toward the equipment cops wear and carry, specifically equipment belts and body armor. Ford said it has made the space between the front seats 11 inches apart, although it continues to make mounting points designed for industry-standard 9-inch equipment panels where radios go. To that end, the console shifter is now a column-mount shifter. Rear seats are vinyl and made for easy cleanup. The same telematics as on civilian Fords is on police cars. Ford includes two years of free service (free once you pay for the car) and, like on civilian cars, it’s AT&T-only, meaning rural departments where Verizon signal is better will have challenges.Police Fords get standard pre-collision assists, including emergency braking but with a disable switch in case a pursuit calls for a controlled tap on the back of the car ahead to spin it. That’s called a precision immobilization technique.Depending on police needs, Ford makes three engines available. Standard on the Police Interceptor Utility is a 3.3-liter hybrid. There’s also a 3.0-liter turbo (EcoBoost) V6 and a 3.3-liter V6. All get 10-speed automatics and full-time all-wheel drive.Ford designed the lithium-ion hybrid battery to power the car’s electronics, lights, and HVAC for extended periods when parked. Ford said it projects the Police Interceptor Utility delivering 24 mpg, a 41 percent improvement over Ford’s current vehicle with a 3.7-liter gasoline engine. Ford projects savings of $3,500-$5,700 in annual savings for the typical car driven two eight-hour shifts daily. It still hits 137 mph. Rural and highway patrol forces can opt for the V6 turbo and do 150 mph.All these are designed to make police departments forget the once-universal V8 Ford Crown Victoria, which went away in 2011. Ford says it currently has 65 percent of the US police vehicle business. Now read:Ford Drops $500M on Rivian, Gets Head Start on EV Pickups, SUVs2020 Ford Explorer: Performance, Cop Car Packages, Tesla-Like Display2019 Ford Edge Review: Self-Driving, Hot Rod Engine, Better Looks Natalie Portman’s Reaction To Marvel’s Phase 4 Slate Tagged In carsautomobilesautosfordhybridshybrid carsFord Police Interceptorcop carsF-150 Police ResponderLos Angeles County Sheriff’s DepartmentMichigan State Policepolice carsPolice Responder Hybrid Sedanpolice safety Post a Comment 7 Commentslast_img read more

How to Make TopRanking Evergreen Content from a Tool Review Post

first_img Evergreen Content is the best possible way to increase organic traffic to your website. Yet, is every type of Evergreen Content going to bring you the same results? The answer is quite simple – no, it won’t.Comparing the most popular software in the form of an in-depth review has always been a good choice for boosting traffic to your website. People are able to see many ads on the main page of their social media account. That’s why they are not sure which software will really satisfy their needs and they look for answers over the Internet.SourceHowever, it is not enough to just write this sort of article. There are a few rules that you need to follow in order to make valuable and engaging content.Tips for Making Top-ranking Evergreen ContentContent writers spend 50+ hours to make engaging Evergreen Content. But, hard work won’t pay off if you do things in the wrong way. We have written many articles of this type and we want to share some useful tips that will help you avoid some common mistakes.Do Keyword Research to see which tools are worth reviewingWriting content about irrelevant software will not bring you success. Why would you spend your time writing about software that no one wants to use? You need to find the tools that are popular among a certain target audience.Research and see which tools are searchable on Google. If there are two of them that you can compare then you got your topic!Ensure the Quality of ContentSourceYour content needs to be valuable for the reader. He needs to feel like he improved his knowledge after reading your content. However, it is not just important what you want to share. It is important how you represent it to your audience. The content needs to be easy-to-read and easy-to-understand. An average reader will stop reading if some part of the content is confusing and complicated. The sentences you use should not be longer than 20 words and do not try to use complicated terms and phrases.Besides that, your content needs to be well-structured. Divide the entire content with a few subheadings and split each section with short paragraphs. Use bullet lists when that is appropriate. Of course, keep in mind that your articles need to be free of any spelling or grammatical mistakes.Add Screenshots and VideosDid you know that an average user spends 88% more time on a website full of videos? People do not like to read long-form articles and contents. Most of the visitors leave the website when they see the text is without screenshots and videos. That sort of content looks boring and monotonous. If you want to stand out from the crowd, include a lot of videos or screenshots (or both).Still, that doesn’t mean you should add any type of screenshots and videos. Add those that will raise the quality of the content to the next level. Including millions of irrelevant videos or screenshot is not going to help.Be ObjectiveAn average Internet user is always suspicious when he sees the content of the unknown website for the first time. This doesn’t need to surprise us because we get a lot of fake news on a daily basis. Always write about the pros and cons of the tool you want to review. Talking only about the positive side of some software will make your Evergreen Content too “salesy”.Your Objectiveness will help the reader to pick the right tool for their needs. The reader will make the wrong decision if you stay subjective. More precisely, you won’t remain the relevant source of information for your audience and they will stop reading your content.Share Your ThoughtsSourceAlways include some kind of conclusion for the tools you are comparing. Here you can express your own conclusions and opinions. Of course, do that only if you are truly familiar with the features of both tools. We already said what will happen if you share the wrong pieces of information.P.S. Once again, stay objective! Samples of a Good Evergreen ContentWe provided you with a theoretical explanation of the top-ranking Evergreen Content from a tool review. But, we would like to share some samples of good Evergreen Content – first sample, second sample. It will make your writing a lot easier. These two samples will show you how your Evergreen Content should exactly look. It would be better to analyze them step-by-step. We will use the first article as an example.Keyword research – The writers have checked which blogger outreach tools are the most popular over the Internet. They did not want to waste their time comparing tools that are not popular among bloggers. To do that, you can use tools such as Ahrefs Keywords Explorer or Google Keyword PlannerQuality of Content – The article is divided with many headings and subheadings. Each section contains short paragraphs and short sentences. Besides that, the bullet lists were used when that was appropriate.SourceScreenshots and Videos – The text is full of screenshots that are making the content more interesting and engaging.Objectiveness – The purpose of this article is not to convince people to use any of these tools. They provided readers with the advantages and disadvantages of each tool from the list.Sharing Thoughts – At the end of the article there is a section “Our Recommendation”. The writers of this evergreen article shared their opinion about the tools. It is true that they gave their opinion. However, they remained objective which confirms that this is a good example of engaging and valuable Evergreen Content.SourcePromotion of the ContentThere are many ways to promote your Evergreen Content and we would like to recommend two of them:Social Media PlatformsLink BuildingSocial Media PlatformsSocial media channels are a powerful tool for Advertising. Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are the places where you should promote your content. Our suggestion is to invest money into ad campaigns. This is a good way to reach your target audience. If they are satisfied with the content you shared, there is a big chance they will continue following your work in the future. BuildingKeep in mind that you need to build quality links towards that post. It will help you establish a good position on Google. You already know what that means for the improvement of organic traffic to your website.ConclusionBefore we say “goodbye”, we would like to make a short summary. Developing Evergreen Content from a tool review post will increase organic traffic to your website. This type of content is searchable on the internet, however, that can’t guarantee your improvement will always be successful.Make a high-quality and engaging content that will really teach your readers something new. Do proper keyword research and see which tools are popular among your target audience. Promote it on each social media platform you use and optimize it for Google if you want to see it on top of search results.Read more: How to Create Viral Content That Generation Z Will Love How to Make Top-Ranking Evergreen Content from a Tool Review Post Deana Kovac2 days agoJuly 15, 2019 AdvertisingContent QualityEvergreen ContentTool Reviewwebsite traffic Previous ArticleLexion Launches AI-Powered Contract Management for Companies of All Sizes; Secures $4.2 Million in FundingNext ArticleB-Scada Inc. Wont Seek Mamatas Support to Form Govt WB Congress Chief Somen Mitra

first_imgKolkata: West Bengal Congress president Somen Mitra said his party won’t seek support from Mamata Banerjee-led TMC to form the next government or support her bid to become the prime minister in case the general election results throw up a hung Parliament.Terming Banerjee the “biggest and most-trusted ally” of RSS-BJP, Mitra said in an interview to PTI that she and her party lack credibility as an anti-BJP force. He claimed Banerjee has kept her “options open” to help BJP, if required, post polls.”I can say this with full responsibility that Congress won’t seek support from Mamata Banerjee or TMC to form the next government in case we fall short of majority.”We won’t need her support. We would form the government on our own with UPA allies. UPA would get a comfortable majority,” Mitra said.Banerjee has often claimed that Congress won’t be able to form the government on its own without her support. She had organised a rally of opposition parties in Kolkata in January but it was not attended by Congress president Rahul Gandhi, its likely PM candidate.Congress had sent party leaders Abhishek Singhvi and Mallikarjun Kharge and a letter of support from Gandhi to Banerjee’s “United India” rally.Asked if Congress would support Banerjee for prime ministership, Mitra said Congress would neither seek Banerjee’s support “nor would it support her prime ministership”.”Why does she need us,” he wondered, possibly knowing that Congress support could be needed in case of a hung Parliament.”TMC’s every step is a calculated move to help BJP in Bengal and in pan-India politics. She is the biggest and most-trusted ally of BJP,” he said, adding that Banerjee should first clear whether she would support BJP or not in case it falls short of majority and Narendra Modi is no longer its PM candidate.”It is an open secret in Bengal that TMC is having an understanding with BJP-RSS. She doesn’t have credibility in the fight against BJP and RSS, rather she has kept her options to help BJP in a post-poll scenario,” the 77-year-old Congress president said.Referring to Banerjee’s claim that Congress has joined hands with RSS-BJP in Malda and Murshidabad district strongholds of Congress, Mitra termed the allegations baseless. He said she is “deliberately making false allegations and attacking Congress and other secular forces in the state to polarize minority votes in her favour and majority votes in BJP’s favour.”Listing out political developments pointing at a TMC-BJP nexus in Bengal, Mitra said the lack of progress in chit-fund scam investigation and Banerjee’s effort to cobble up a federal front to weaken the opposition unity are ample examples of nexus between both the parties.”The Supreme Court has ordered CBI investigation in the chit-fund scam on the basis of the case filed by Congress leader Abdul Mannan. But what is the progress of the investigation in this scam by CBI in last five years? The answer is zero. Is it not an example of understanding between both the parties,” he questioned.During polling in Coochbehar Lok Sabha seat on April 11, there were complaints about malpractices. The BJP has been talking about deployment of central forces. “So what was the central forces doing when votes were looted in Coochbehar,” Mitra questioned.”She is propagating opposition unity without Congress. Is it possible in our country where you can just writ off a party like Congress in fight against BJP. Actually this is being deliberately done to weaken the opposition unity and divide it and help BJP,” he said.Mitra, a veteran Congressman who had moved to TMC in 2008, returned to his parent party in 2014 and took over the post of president of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee after a gap of two decades in 2018.Bengal, with its 42 Lok Sabha seats, has the third-largest share in Parliament after Uttar Pradesh (80) and Maharashtra (48).While TMC has set a target of winning all 42 seats, the BJP, which has emerged as the main challenger to Trinamool Congress in Bengal, has set an ambitious target of 23 seats in the state.Buffeted by a steady erosion in its vote bank and exodus of its leaders and workers to the state’s ruling TMC and a resurgent BJP, the Congress is fighting a grim battle to stay relevant in West Bengal politics in Lok Sabha elections.Exuding confidence of retaining the four seats Congress presently has Malda North, Malda South, Baharampore, Jangipur, Mitra asserted his party would improve its tally and vote share in Bengal.”I am not a astrologer to predict how many number of seats we would win this time. But we would retain all four seats, increase both our tally and our vote share,” he said.Leaders from various parties have joined Congress in last one year and defection of some of Congress leaders to TMC or BJP “won’t have any impact”, he said in a reference to 17 Congress MLAs and one MP switching over to TMC in last three years.Asked why Congress-CPI(M) seat-sharing deal failed, Mitra refrained from getting into a blame game and said the failure won’t impact his party’s prospects in Bengal.”It is for people to decide why it (seat sharing) did not happen. You should ask CPI(M) why didn’t happen, he said. The Congress has previously accused the CPI(M) of not following the “alliance dharma”. BJPcongressCoochbehar Lok SabhaMallikarjun Kharge First Published: April 18, 2019, 8:10 PM ISTlast_img read more

If We Dont Who Will Grandchildren of Three Former Haryana CMs Defend

first_imgNew Delhi: Be it any party, sons, daughter and grandchildren of prominent leaders are entering the poll fray reaffirming that politics is deeply entrenched in their families. Voting will take place on May 12 in all ten seats of Haryana.Grandchildren of three former Haryana Chief Ministers, Devi Lal, Bhajan Lal and Bansi Lal will be contesting. Digvijay Chautala, grandson of Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) founder Chaudhary Devi Lal, is contesting from Sonepat on a Jananayak Janata Party ticket; Bhajan Lal, Bishnoi’s grandson Bhavya Bishnoi is the Congress candidate from Hisar; and Congress’ Shruti Chaudhary, granddaughter of Bansi Lal, is contesting from Bhiwani Mahendragarh. Three-time Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda, who is the son of former Haryana CM and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda and grandson of Congress leader and part of the erstwhile Constituent Assembly Ranbir Singh Hooda, is looking for a fourth term in the Parliament, as well. The prominent Chautala clan, which split last year following a bitter family feud, is being represented by three of its members. JJP, formed in December last year after Ajay Chautala and his sons separated from INLD, is fielding Dushyant and Digvijay from Hisar and Sonepat respectively. The third, Arjun Chautala, son of Abhay Chautala, is the INLD candidate from Kurukshetra.JJP made its electoral debut early this year in Jind bypoll and left some impact when Digvijay finished second behind BJP candidate Krishan Midha. In its first Lok Sabha poll appearance, JJP is banking on Dushyant Chautala, Digivijay’s elder brother, to retain his Hisar seat, where he is up against Congress’ Bhavya Bishnoi. Digvijay, meanwhile, is the JJP candidate from Sonepat, where he will square off against Congress’ Bhupinder Hooda. The 27-year-old is confident about his Lok Sabha debut, despite a former CM contesting on the same seat against him. Digvijay is banking on the sentiment of Sonepat residents who still hold his grandfather, Devi Lal, in high esteem. “Look, there is an atmosphere against BJP. The local MP is facing backlash during his village visits. And ‘Hooda ji’ had already said that he did not want to contest elections, but did so because his party asked him to. So he is helpless,” Digvijay said.According to him, even if Hooda won from Sonepat, he would depart the region for Kiloi to contest Assembly polls six months later. The people of Sonepat would then have to elect an MP again. “If he commits to Sonepat for five years then I’ll accept he is more suitable, but if he is leaving, why should the public’s effort and money be wasted to conduct re-elections?”Digvijay also said he was following in the footsteps of his grandfather, father and elder brother, and just like them he had chosen not to contest at home turf. When asked about the clout of political families in Haryana, Digvijay said responsibilities are indeed passed down to generations. “Look, Devi Lal, Bansi Lal were big leaders. Devi Lal had a big contribution in Haryana’s formation and everyone knows how he fought and struggled,” Digvijay said, “So today, being from their future generation, we have a responsibility on our shoulders. People have higher expectations from us. But when people like Dushyant come in and deliver, people are assured that Devi Lal’s blood is not just asking for votes, but also working for them.”According to the JJP candidate, one could get elected once in the name of their father or grandfather, but they would have to work to get elected a second time. “Leaders from my family were elected from different seats in different states. My father won from Rajasthan, in Danta Ramgarh. My brother breached Bhajan Lal’s stronghold in Hisar. Devi Lal ji won from Sikar and Rohtak. Today, I have got a similar opportunity in Sonepat,” Digvijay said. “People in different regions accept our ideology and are ready to support us. So why not? If I don’t take up that responsibility, then who will?” he asks.Bhavya Bishnoi, 26, is also following a long line of leaders from his family into politics after spending his early years as an aspiring cricketer. He is the son of Congress MLAs Kuldeep and Renuka Bishnoi and grandson of former Haryana CM Bhajan Lal. He played the ‘gentleman’s game’ for Delhi, before completing his education abroad and taking up the political mantle in his family.“Look, India has enough good cricketers and even if I become a successful cricketer, I’ll only make a marginal difference. However, there is a dearth of good politicians and if I were to try my best, I have the potential to make revolutionary change in my constituency, state and beyond,” Bishnoi said.Bishnoi is bidding to retake Hisar, considered a political bastion of his family, from incumbent MP Dushyant Chautala, who had defeated his father Kuldeep Bishnoi in 2014 Lok Sabha polls. “It is still our stronghold and it is our home,” Bishnoi said. “The circumstances that led to our defeat last election were to some extent beyond our control. They are very different today.”Bishnoi said he didn’t see his candidature as product of dynastic politics, but as ‘an expression of democracy’. “See, we are living in a democracy, at the end of the day the power rests in the hands of the people. And we belong to the biggest and the oldest national party in the country. If the national leadership has taken a certain decision, they do it after thorough assessment and proper survey of all available candidates,” Bihsnoi said. The Congress candidate claimed that his family has delivered on people’s expectations and hence the party had trusted him to deliver. “So I don’t see it as dynastic politics, it’s just people’s expectations, love and expression of democracy.” Bhajan LalChautalaDanta Ramgarhdeepender singh hooda First Published: April 24, 2019, 4:24 PM ISTlast_img read more
