Gold box office collection Day 5: Akshay Kumar film is unstoppable

This time Akshay Kumar has brought to the big screen the inspiring story of India’s first Olympic win as an independent nation. Titled Gold, Reema Kagti’s directorial venture has not only got a thumbs up from critics but has struck the right chord with fans too.Despite stiff competition from John Abraham’s Satyamev Jayate at the box office, Gold is holding its position. So much so, that the film is now slowly inching towards the Rs 100-crore mark.The sports drama, which opened to a smashing Rs 25.25 crore on Independence Day, has become the third highest opener this year, after Sanju and Race 3. It has also overtaken Singh Is Bliing (which earned Rs 20.67 crore on its first day) to become Akshay Kumar’s highest opening film ever.After crossing the Rs 50-crore mark, the film struck gold at the ticket windows on Sunday. According to early estimates, Gold earned Rs 16 crore (approx), thus taking the total to Rs 71.25 crore (approx).The film revolves around independent India’s first Olympic gold win – a feat achieved by the Indian men’s hockey team in 1948 at the 14th London Olympiad. Akshay plays the role of the manager of the team, Tapan Das.It was a clash of the titans this year, as Gold locked horns with the other Independence Day release, John Abraham-starrer Satyameva Jayate, which also opened to a phenomenal response at the box office.
