Talking to Headlines Today Maken demanded an out-of-turn promotion for Kumar, who has so far been the biggest achiever in the ongoing London Games.Kumar is employed with the Indian Army as a Subedar and has been deprived of any promotion despite his impressive shows at various international tournaments, including the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.Maken had earlier written to Defence Minister A.K. Antony urging him to allow the army rules that prevent recognition of such an achievement unlike other government and semi-government organisations after certain extent. The minister said not only Kumar, but any sportsperson winning laurels for the nation at the highest level should get their due in their respective organisations and be given officer’s grade.”What I am trying to say is that any sportsperson representing India at the Olympics means that he is a world class athlete. On one hand we always say that India is not performing so well in Olympics or international forum, but on the other hand if we are unable to treat our elite athletes, well, what kind of signals are we giving to other budding athletes,” Maken asked.”In order to motivate other athletes to take up athletics or sports as their full-time career option we should provide opportunities, we should showcase it to them that look if you perform well at the international level you will be taken good care of by the government.advertisementIn this case or in every respect what I am trying to say is that all such sportspersons who have represented India at the Olympic level should be given officer grade job in their respective organisations,” he added.”In a decision taken by the Cabinet all such civilian government servants who have represented India at the Olympics and have won a medal would be automatically given a promotion… similarly in Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and world championships.Unfortunately Vijay Kumar in the past six years has won many medals for his country but he has not been given his due in the organisation where he is working. So what we are trying to say is that on one hand when civilians working in the government have been given due promotion by their own respective governments so why can’t the army do that,” Maken asked.”But if suppose the army or the defence ministry is unable to do that, we are coming out with a policy where we are inviting all such Olympians to join Sports Authority of India as a coach as a group B officer grade. And, any of such Olympians who are able to win medals be it even the bronze medals they will be automatically be promoted to group A category of officers which is equivalent to IAS officer,” the minister said promising a better future for the performers.last_img
