After winning the Gulf South Conference title for the first time since 2002 last season, West Florida (17-6) repeated as conference champions with a 5-3 win over fourth-ranked Valdosta State (15-4) on Sunday. The win gave West Florida their record-setting ninth conference championship. All three doubles matches were very close, but West Florida was able to come out on top in each match. However, Valdosta State immediately answered with three straight singles wins in the third, fifth and sixth positions. But West Florida pulled out the win with a pair of three set wins in the first position by Suzana Cavalcante (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and in the second position by Tammy Kevey (Auckland, New Zealand). West Florida and Valdosta State will both advance to the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament on May 3-4. It is expected that both schools will host the two regional tournaments in the south region. Seedings and brackets will be announced on Wednesday. RESULTS#1 Singles: Suzana Cavalcante (UWF) def.
