Discover how you can quickly modify the colors and intensity values in your video footage using LUTs in DaVinci Resolve.Over the last few years, with the explosion of more affordable color grading applications and video shooters capturing more RAW (flat) images, the term “LUT” is being used quite often. But what exactly is a LUT and how/why would you want to use it in your color grading projects?LUT stands for “Look Up Table“. Simply put, it’s a formula of numbers that can mathematically translate set values in your image into another set of values. A recent NoFilmSchool post defines it nicely:LUTs are not used to creatively grade a final result, they’re used to make up a difference between a source and a result. In practical application… the LUT will let you view your footage during editing more naturally than the flat, desaturated image originally recorded. Some LUTs are used for on-set viewing, while others are designed for post production and color grading. Many video pros will use a LUT to determine how their video footage will look when printed to film, while it’s still a digital file in their color grading app. There’s now a ton of third party LUTs you can purchase/download and apply to your projects and custom generators for creating your own LUTs (like this free generator from Arri). The following video tutorial by Andrew McKee of PixelWizard Post (below) demonstrates how to use a LUT in DaVinci Resolve. The LUTs for this particular exercise are taken from Juan Melara, a successful colorist we’ve featured previously on the Premiumbeat blog. Download the free LUT files HERE and preview them in action:Andrew’s LUT tutorial is essential viewing for anyone using DaVinci Resolve or interested in high-end color grading. You’ll walk away with a good understanding of “What is a LUT?” as well as how to successfully use them in DaVinci Resolve:
While pugilists gave their blood and sweat to qualify for the Asian Games, there is a possibility that India may not be able to field a boxing team at next month’s mega event. As per the directive from the international boxing federation (AIBA), the elections for a new body in India are to be held on or before September 11. If India fails to conduct the election for a new boxing body by the scheduled date, the pugilist may miss out once again. Since AIBA revoked India’s membership in December 2012, the boxers in the country have suffered immensely.A Sports Authority of India (SAI) official said the boxers’ training has already been hampered because of the administrative mess.SAI director general Jiji Thomson said if the deadlock persists, they may be left with no choice but to withdraw the boxing team for which the selection trials concluded in Patiala on Wednesday.”Yes, there is every chance of that (AIBA not allowing Indian boxers to participate at the Asiad),” Thomson said.Sudhir Setia, a SAI executive director, elaborated further. “If the boxing body fails to conduct the election within the timeframe (Sept 11) given by AIBA, there is a possibility that we may not be able to field our boxers at the Asian Games because AIBA may not allow us any more time.”SAI has failed to convince any country to invite Indian boxers for training camps. “No country is willing to accept our boxers for training because of AIBA’s decision to revoke our membership.advertisementAll this has affected our medal tally at the CWGand may do so again at the Incheon Asiad,” Setia added. The government is expecting 72-100 medals at the Asian Games and will not field teams in baseball, bowling, fencing, karate, modern pentathlon, rugby, softball, soft tennis and triathlon.Although table tennis is also on the radar as SAI doesn’t expect them to win medals in a discipline which is dominated by Asian countries. There is still suspense over football. “As of now, we have a 912-member contingent and it will be trimmed after we get approval from the sports minister. Our football teams don’t figure in top-8 in Asia which is the benchmark for selection in team sport,” said Thomson.

The state faces major challenges in improving and increasing access to health care services, but they are making significant strides. The Government of Tamil Nadu developed a Health Policy in 2003 with a focus on the health of low-income communities and families. The Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project supports this strategy through several interventions, especially those aimed at reducing infant and maternal mortality. The World Bank recently provided more funds, in addition to the original financing in 2004, to further improve health services quality and access while supporting state-wide management systems implementation. The Project has utilized several innovative and effective measures (PDF). To increase access to necessary maternal and neonatal health services, 80 comprehensive emergency obstetrics and neonatal centers have been established and strengthened, leading to improved quality of care for women and infants. This care includes health education, nutritional support, and HIV/AIDS testing and counseling. In addition, 385 ambulances have been provided under the project, managed under a public private partnership, increasing emergency transport services in rural areas. These public private partnerships have also provided mobile out-reach health services as well as other services. The Project also launched a pilot program that includes ensuring women’s reproductive health through cervical cancer screenings. The pilot program has had great success with 84% of women in the target age group of 30 – 60 years being screened in the Theni and Thanjavur districts and the scheme could be extended to the whole of Tamil Nadu.To ensure that women’s and infants’ health visits are recorded, an electronic health management system was established and is now operational in 38 secondary level hospitals, with plans to extend to all 270, and to 18 medical colleges. These electronic records prove invaluable in maintaining and monitoring a woman’s and her infants’ health throughout the continuum of care. From these interventions and more, Tamil Nadu has seen improvements in both maternal and infant health. Infant mortality has decreased by 35%. The state’s maternal mortality ratio has decreased 50% from 167 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1999 to 111 in 2006, while India’s MMR in 2008 was 230. While this is exciting progress, it is still 25 times higher than in developed countries. But with further improvements to quality of care and strengthened comprehensive emergency obstetric and neonatal care, Tamil Nadu is on the right track.Share this:
