“For the good of all I decided to quit even though I do it with heartache,” Leekens told the Algerian Football Federation website.“I wish all the success in the world to the national side.”The 67-year-old Belgian was appointed to the role only in October, for what was his second spell in charge following a four-month stint in 2003.He had been expected to take Algeria deep into the latter stages at least in Gabon, coaching a side that contains BBC and CAF African Footballer of the Year Riyad Mahrez and his Leicester team-mate Islam Slimani, Porto’s Yacine Brahimi and Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam. But the team underperformed at the tournament, beginning their Group B matches with a shock 2-2 draw with Zimbabwe – in which they scored an 82nd-minute goal by Mahrez to rescue a point. That was followed by a 2-1 defeat by their north African Neighbours Tunisia, which left them needing to beat Senegal in their final match on Monday to have any chance of making it to the quarter-finals.But they were held 2-2 by a reserve Senegal side, who had already won the group before the match, and suffered an embarrassing elimination.Algeria is also struggling to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The Fennecs are bottom of Group B – which also contains Nigeria, Cameroon and Zambia – after two matches, having drawn one and lost one.Only the group winners go through and they already trail Nigeria by five points.“Given the pressure on the federation and the national team, I preferred to end my contract out of friendship for the president of the FAF (Algerian Football Federation) who deserves respect,” Leekens added.Leekens was Algeria’s third coach in a year, following on from Milovan Rajevac and Christian Gourcuff.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegram AFCON 2017…AFCON 2017…Algeria Coach, Georges Leekens, tuesday resigned following the team’s early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations. The Fennecs were one of the pre-tournament favourites but were knocked out of the finals on Monday night after failing to win a game in Gabon.

The Nigeria Football Federation said Tuesday that national coach Stephen Keshi has rescinded his resignation and negotiations continue between the two sides following the team’s win at the African Cup of Nations.Keshi and the Super Eagles, who beat Burkina Faso 1-0 Sunday to win the African Cup for the first time in 19 years, are due to return Tuesday to celebrations and a presidential gala in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. Keshi’s resignation, which he publicly announced on a South African radio station Monday night, served as yet another major embarrassment for the country’s football regime, which has been surrounded by allegations of corruption and mismanagement for years. The federation issued a statement early Tuesday morning, labeled as being on behalf of Keshi, saying the coach had taken back his resignation letter.“While I have had cause to express my displeasure over some issues that happened in the course of our participation in the AFCON (African Cup of Nations) 2013, which my team won by the grace of God, especially concerning my relationship with the Nigerian Football Federation, I have since had opportunity to discuss the various issues with all concerned,” the statement quoted Keshi as saying. “I am therefore pleased to say that I have reconsidered my position and have decided to continue with my job.”The statement said Keshi thanked Nigeria’s Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi for “his swift and kind intervention.” Abdullahi did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday from The Associated Press.Keshi’s displeasure with the football federation had been hinted at for days. In an interview Monday with Metro FM, a radio station run by South Africa’s state broadcaster, Keshi said he turned in his resignation immediately following Nigeria’s win over Burkina Faso at Soccer City in Johannesburg. Keshi told Metro FM his decision step down stemmed from his anger over federation officials threatening to fire him just prior to Nigeria’s quarterfinal against Ivory Coast. The resignation threat means Keshi will now start negotiations with Nigerian officials over what it will take for him to stay on to coach the 52nd-ranked Super Eagles, whose win Sunday sent them into the first-round group with Spain, Uruguay and Tahiti at June’s Confederations Cup in Brazil.Keshi has previously said he has not received his salary payments on time from the federation, and has not been given his official accommodations or a staff car promised to him.Keshi was Nigeria captain when it won the African Cup of Nations in 1994. The former central defender was the first black African coach in more than 20 years to win the tournament. He earned his chance with Nigeria’s national team after spells in charge of Mali and Togo, and also as an assistant coach when Nigeria last made the final, in 2000.
Kendrick Perkins blasts Steve Kerr for criticizing Anthony Davis’ trade to Lakers “To be able to win something, you have to be able to sacrifice some parts of your game and we both understand that,” Westbrook continued. “We both understand that we have one common goal and that’s to win a championship.”I don’t have to touch the ball to impact the game… I can do other things on the floor to make sure we have a better chance of winning.”Westbrook and Harden both like to have the ball a lot. The duo are the only players in NBA history to exceed 40.0 in usage percentage, and now they’ll have to share a backcourt. They last played together in 2012-13, before Harden was traded to the Rockets. Since then, both have been named MVP (Westbrook in 2016-17). Regardless, Westbrook is confident the two will can work well together.”We play great off the ball with each other. We’ve done it in OKC,” Westbrook said.Westbrook elaborated on what else he brings to the table, besides orchestrating an offense.”I think I can be able to help a lot on the rebounding end, and switching and finding a way to get into the passing lanes. Maybe throw a few lobs to James if he’s still got it. Figuring out a way to be able to just impact and use my athleticism.”He also addressed his health, as he underwent a procedure on his right knee in May. He assured reporters he is on track to play in camp.”I’ll be ready to go by training camp,” Westbrook said. “I’m doing great. Taking my time. Resting as much as I can, because we’re gon’ go after it at the start of the season and I’ll be ready to go.” Westbrook, 30, averaged a triple-double for the third consecutive season in 2018-19, but he admits the path to success with a new team might require a different approach. Especially playing alongside his longtime friend and former teammate James Harden, who was named the NBA’s MVP in 2017-18.”Me and James have been friends for many, many years, since I was 10 actually,” Westbrook said, alluding to when the two played youth basketball in the Los Angeles area growing up. Related News Clippers, Steve Ballmer unveil plan for potential multi-billion dollar, privately funded arena All in all, Westbrook appears like he’s prepared for the next chapter.”I think it’s a great opportunity to be able to bring a championship here to Houston,” he said. “An opportunity to do great things, have some fun and I’m excited for it.” Russell Westbrook was introduced to the city of Houston on Friday and had plenty to say about his new situation at an introductory press conference. The Rockets guard was traded by the Thunder earlier this month in a deal that sent future draft picks, pick swaps and Chris Paul to Oklahoma City. Now he’ll form half of what’s arguably the NBA’s most dynamic backcourt.

Internet of Things Makes it Easier to Steal You… Follow the Puck ReadWrite Sponsors Related Posts At the beginning of any new year comes the inevitable sense of curiosity and wonder as to what the next twelve months will have in store. This phenomenon holds especially true in our current day and age where the ever expanding Internet of Things is transforming business models, enabling brand new products and services that are truly revolutionizing the world in which we live in.Now, with a few weeks already in the books, we wanted to share our Top 7 IoT predictions for 2017.1. 4G IoT takes center stage, 5G buzz grows louderAs many cellular carriers roll out plans to shut down their 2G and 3G networks – it’s no news that 4G LTE has evolved from a differentiator to more of a standard for IoT connected businesses to remain competitive. Now that we’re beginning to wrap our heads around the potential of 4G and the ways that these networks can be deployed – it’s expected that, despite many unknowns, the topic of 5G will become an increasingly popular discussion topic with an influx of opinions and predictions from industry thought leaders, analysts, and research firms around the future role of 5G and how it will be adopted and applied to the IoT.2. Emergence of narrowband IoTTaking a look at the other extreme IoT trend, we foresee greater adoption of Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) for technologies that require less robust and less frequent data transmissions to automate and simplify existing tasks. 2017 could be the year for NB-IoT to make a splash for applications in Utilities, Structure Monitoring, and Agriculture where the miles-long connection ranges and affordable price points are especially attractive.3. eSIM matures — how will carriers respond?Sometimes regarded as the “Holy Grail” of IoT connectivity, many anticipate the maturation of portable subscription management via embedded SIM (eSIM) cards to advance in the coming year. eSIM allows wireless IoT devices to shift from network to network in order to optimize coverage presenting the opportunity for faster, more reliable, and more powerful IoT applications. The technology is essentially already here – the real question lies in the commercial realization of the connectivity opportunities, primarily by the cellular carriers themselves.By embracing and facilitating a wide-open infrastructure, the carriers could redefine themselves and transition from a network carrier to a true facilitator of mobile utilization.Alex Brisbourne, CEO, KORE Wireless Group Inc.4. IoT-managed tablets taking the reinsTablets have been wildly popular in the consumer market for years now, but the shift to B2B adoption is set to provide a tangible link between IoT “vision” and “execution”. For deskless workers operating in industries ranging from Retail and Hospitality, to Field Services, to Healthcare; the IoT managed tablet provides many advantages over the traditional PC. Its physical makeup as a lightweight, practical device for easy transportation during a day’s work is complemented by its task-oriented usability and power to connect to the Internet by virtually every means available, extending beyond the limitations of WiFi.5. IoT security comes to the forefrontBoth wired and wireless Internet connections have introduced a multitude of IoT ingress points for hackers to get ahold of – many of which present the potential for disaster. With these concerns coming to life, 2017 should present both significant funding and attention into consumer, commercial, and industrial security of IoT. As IoT solution providers work to decrease vulnerabilities – expect to see movement on security development and protocols as new standards and devices enter the marketplace.6. Consolidation in the IoTWith the IoT become more widely adopted across a nearly infinite number of vertical markets – a growing number of wireless companies will join the race looking for their piece of the IoT pie. With more providers comes the inevitable consolidation of the industry with smaller companies looking to provide the edge and value required to be absorbed by the biggest and best in the space.7. Rise of “plug and play” IoTAs a fairly new area of technology – the IoT vendor ecosystem has traditionally been one of fragmentation, creating complexities for those looking to launch an IoT deployment. In 2017, all-in-one IoT partners and providers will gain increasing appeal by accelerating time-to-market, providing technical expertise and support, providing interoperable components, and enabling ubiquitous connectivity via multiple worldwide wireless networks. This article was produced in partnership with KORE.The author is CEO and KORE Wireless Group Inc. and has over 20 years of experience in the networking and telecommunications industry in companies all over the world, including in Europe, North America, and Asia.
