FURIOUS LARKIN ASKS COUNCIL TO SUPPORT CALL TO CHOP FUNDING FOR LITTER GROUP

first_imgLetterkenny Town Council is to be asked to call on the Minister for the Environment to pull the €70,000 in funding for the Irish Business Against Litter group. The call is to be made by Cllr Dessie Larkin at next Monday’s meeting of the council. It follows a survey in recent days which left Letterkenny close to the bottom of the list of tidy towns in Ireland. Cllr Larkin said the survey has the potential to do untold damage to the Cathedral Town.Cllr Larkin questioned the tactics used by IBAL to collate their list which even included a reference to he picnic area in Manorcunningham – miles from Letterkenny.Cllr Larkin pointed to the fact that the Cathedral Town is pushing to win the National Tidy Towns Award and yet has been found one of the most littered towns in Ireland by IBAL.“How can Letterkenny be pushing for Ireland’s cleanest town in a recognised competition like the Tidy Towns and be so poorly marked by IBAL. “I know the organisers and judges of th Tidy Towns have their own criteria but I have serious concerns that this will reflect badly for us.“Letterkenny Main Street is cleaned 364 days of the year and so much hard work goes in to preserving our image.“I would be the first to say something if we were falling down but I think we have ben treated badly by IBAL and it’s not the first time,” he said.He said the criteria set down by IBAL was poor and said the €70,000 spent in Government funding on the group would be better spent somewhere else.“I know form talking with my fellow councillors that they feel they same way and I will be hoping for their full support at Monday night’s meting,” he said.
