Dat Poe The Anatomy of Fear For nine days in January, Markeith Loyd put Central Florida through hell. According to police reports, on January 9th, he shot and killed an Orlando police officer Debra Clayton. He then eluded law enforcement until January 17th when he was finally captured.Last week State Attorney Aramis Ayala shocked Central Florida with her decision not to seek the death penalty for Loyd, and then doubled down in stating she would not seek the death penalty in any case she prosecutes in Orange or Osceola counties.Ayala explained her reasoning, “Number one—the death penalty has no public safety benefit. Number two—the death penalty does not increase safety for law enforcement officers. Number three—the death penalty generally is not a deterrent.”Orlando Police Chief John Mina said he was “extremely upset.” He said Loyd should face the death penalty if convicted of killing Clayton and his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon.Loyd faces two first-degree murder counts and other charges in the deaths of Sade and Clayton.“The heinous crimes that he committed in our community are the very reason that we have the death penalty as an option under the law,” Mina’s statement said. Was Ayala’s decision correct? Do the crimes Loyd is accused of rise to the level of a capital offense?A reader poll:[poll id=”27″] Reply Mama Mia you have had your eyes blinded by hatred. It pours out of every word you have written.Mourn with those who lost loved ones to the heinous unthinkable actions of Markeith. The people who have rallied in a maddening mob reminiscent of lynching mobs to crucify, murder, or kill Markeith; I find disgusting and disturbing. Our nation has been steeped in violence and our supposed greatness was built on that violence, even writing this and thinking about it disturbs me deeply. Do I believe Markeiths actions are disgusting!Of course!Four people have lost their lives, but to then kill further to quench the thirst of people like you that believe that further killing is the answer to reap justice is appalling. No form of justice will bring back those whose lives have been lost. Taking his absolutely won’t. It will not soothe the heartbreak or fill the well of anger that cry’s out to our most primal instinct to kill him in the name of justice. Ayala’s actions are within her right as the elected state prosecutor. She is within her right to put together an administration under her leadership that focuses more on rehabilitation than incarceration or in this particular case, execution. Why do we murder people under the name of the death penalty? Is it to deter further killing? Well that does not work! Look around and see that it has not worked. I write poignantly and passionately and if I have offended I hope it is a righteous offense that will drive you and others that think like you, along with us all, to think more deeply about how socially exceptable it has become for us to cheer for the death penalty.Power To The People – #4 Please enter your comment! 3 COMMENTS March 20, 2017 at 12:23 pm Our prosecutor who refuses to seek the death penalty in any case here in her jurisdiction, now has filed a motion to stay on as our prosecutor, and says the governor doesn’t have the authority to remove her from office. That was not what I heard! I heard the Senate can remove her per the governor! We already have a president who apparently does as he pleases, and now we have a local prosecutor who apparently just does as she pleases, too. This is getting ridiculous!!! They both need booted out of office!!! She is Markeith Loyd’s best buddy now, but guess what? He would have gunned Ayala down in a NY minute too, just like he did the other two women if she had of crossed his path on that fateful day there in the Walmart parking lot! She needs to return back to being a criminal defense lawyer not a prosecutor!!!! Mama Mia March 20, 2017 at 12:28 pm You have entered an incorrect email address!
